STD Definition

STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are diseases which are transmitted mainly but not exclusively by sexual means. The main cause of STDs is sexual promiscuity, also known as "casual sex" or "sleeping around".

STD Symptoms

Not everyone who contracts a sexually transmitted infection would exhibit symptoms.

STD symptoms may appear on the external genitalia as:
  • Painful urination & discharge. Eg: Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia
  • Ulcers. Eg: Herpes, Syphilis, Chancroid.
  • Rash. Eg: Candidiasis.
  • Blisters. Eg: Herpes.
  • Growths. Eg: Genital warts and Anal warts.
  • No symptoms. Eg: HIV.

STD Testing

In order to investigate STDs comprehensively, samples would have to be taken and sent for testing.

Full/Total/Complete STD Testing / STD Check / Sexual Health Screening packages (price includes consultation fees):
  • Men who practice insertive sex SG$497/=
  • Women who practice vaginal sex SG$737/= (includes Digene® HPV DNA & ThinPrep® test)
  • Either sex practicing anal sex SG$697/= (includes Digene® HPV DNA test)
  • Other variations - discuss with the doctor.
Basic package includes:
  • Clinical History
  • Physical Examination - Consider trimming your pubic hair with a scissors to about 1mm length. It will be easier to see and treat any disease. Do not shave. Shaving cuts the skin, and may spread any existing disease.
  • Laboratory Testing - When you arrive at the clinic, do not go to the toilet. Should we need to sample your urine for testing, it is recommended that the urine be retained in your bladder for 4 hours or more.
STD testing would include blood sampling. In addition, for a male, urine samples are obtained. For the female, high vaginal swabs are taken.

Blood results would take 2-3 days to return. Urine and swab sample testing would take about a week to return. This is because the samples are sent for bacterial culture and PCR testing.

It takes up to a week for the bacterial cultures to grow, be identified, and tested for antibiotic spectrum of sensitivity. And the PCR testing would also take up to a week, as the DNA fragments from the dead bacteria would have to undergo a few incubation cycles to amplify the genetic sequences for detection.

HIV Test. Rapid HIV testing can also be done with the Orasure Oraquick® Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test.

HIV PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) treatment within 72 hours of exposure to HIV, can prevent HIV infection.
